Why Choose a Lithium-Ion Battery Backup

Lithium-ion UPS batteries offer a range of benefits that make them an ideal choice over other UPS battery chemistries, such as extended lifespan, increased power density, smaller footprint, and increased cycle life. Lithium battery backup solutions are available in multiple lithium chemistries to support different UPS systems.

The various lithium-ion battery chemistries supply a wide range of power densities, energy ratings, and safety attributes. The differences between each lithium-ion chemistry now allows clients to customize their battery solutions to fit the design requirements and use cases of their UPS battery backup system.

The Basics of a Lithium-Ion Battery

Lithium-ion batteries consist of a cathode (positive electrode), an anode (negative electrode), and some chemistry of electrolyte.

The cathode can be some chemical form of metal oxide and the anode consists of porous carbon (graphite) or lithium titanate.

During discharge, the ions flow from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte and separator.

When the battery charges, the flow reverses and the direction and the ions flow from the cathode to the anode.

Lithium-Ion UPS Batteries Achieve Superior Life Spans

15-20-year design life helps sustain and grow your mission critical needs

It is important to choose not only the best battery for your immediate runtime needs, but also consider the total life span of the lithium-ion battery backup system.

An ideal UPS lithium battery can support critical functions during an outage consistently over a decade (10 years) before a replacement is required. Lithium-ion battery backup solutions offer extended life spans compared to VRLA and Pure Lead batteries - without the price hike you see with 20-year VRLA and wet cell batteries.

Clients searching for reliability and superior life often turn to Mitsubishi Electric lithium-ion UPS battery solutions.

Lithium-Ion UPS Batteries Lower Your Total Cost of Ownership

The extended design life of a lithium battery backup system provides a significant advantage both in realized CAPEX and OPEX costs. Upfront and operational costs must be considered regarding the battery system's life, including replacement costs.

Fewer replacements mean fewer outlays of cash down the road. A Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analysis shows lithium-ion as a smart and efficient backup power solution over the lifetime of the equipment.

With a 40-60% smaller footprint and 60% lower weight, lithium battery backup solutions for UPS systems take up less space that can be leveraged for critical equipment and weigh less in transport.

With lithium-ion UPS backup systems, you don’t have to sacrifice power for floor space. Mitsubishi Electric lithium-ion battery cabinets have a power density that is 4x that of traditional battery solutions.

The high discharge power and small footprint makes lithium battery backup systems a perfect solution for edge data centers, as well as pre-fabricated construction

*When compared to legacy backup power solutions

Mitsubishi Electric offers multiple lithium-ion battery backup products to protect your critical operations. Among these are our lithium-ion battery cabinets, each with its own virtues, depending on your particular runtime requirements, UPS size, and power needs.

Our lithium-ion battery cabinets are available in a Lithium Manganese Oxide chemistry, also known as Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide. This chemistry is safe, dependable, and would be well-suited to support a lithium-ion UPS in standard or edge data center applications.

With Mitsubishi Electric lithium-ion UPS solutions, you get the 4 M’s:

  • More Power
  • More Reliability
  • More Efficiency
  • More Value

Lithium Manganese Oxide/Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) batteries provide high thermal stability and enhanced safety. LMO has low internal cell resistance that enables fast charging and high-current discharging.

It is typically mixed with Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC), and the NMC improves specific energy and prolongs the life span of the battery. The result is a battery that is power dense, can discharge quickly and safely, and has a relatively long battery life.

We supply two LMO battery backup solutions, the BCL04-CB and BCL04-CBA01. The BCL04-CB is compatible with multiple Mitsubishi Electric UPS, while the BCL04-CBA01 was specifically designed for our 1100B (10-80kVA) UPS.

These lithium-ion battery backups offer a lower environmental footprint and weight compared to VRLA batteries, as well as a 15-year lifespan best-suited for 2-20-minute runtimes.

Code Certifications

The codes and regulations for lithium-ion batteries are constantly changing. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Fire Code (IFC) added sections directly related to the installation and use of lithium ion batteries.

In combination with these, UL and IEC have created requirements for lithium ion batteries to ensure their safe use and operation in energy storage systems. Mitsubishi Electric can help you navigate the latest information and codes.
